CHAPTER 17

Holiday Inn Express, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Sir,

2300: After the bleakness of the last thirty-something hours, I thought you’d like to hear an update from here at Fort Carson. Hopefully you’ve had a chance to review the trips from the two ships at Norfolk, so I won’t rehash any of that.

As is the case everywhere now, speculation of the events unfolding in America seems to be taking a life of its own. The internal unrest here in the west is palpable, surely enhanced by the attack but a few miles from here. Yet I feel that even if that hadn’t happened, I’d still be sensing the same vibe. Directly after the rumors about cartel infestation and motive for the event is a general conversation about violence in the streets. The continuous power failures, the hyper-inflation, and the fact that shelves are half-full has most people concerned. In fact, I don’t recall anyone asking about the progress on the Seattle relief efforts in days…maybe in over a week. The mayor and city council in Denver just confiscated any relief supplies that were bound for airdrops to Seattle. I can attest in my own experience that traveling by air or car comes with its own inherent risks. By air, one is bound to be stranded for days without luggage in an airport. By car… Well, I figure it’s just a matter of time before I turn up the wrong street and run right into some sort of ‘protest.’ Regarding my discussion with 62nd Cyber, I’ll shoot onto base first thing in the morning and send an encrypted email.

Tonight, I dined out at a local restaurant here in Colorado Springs, and I wound up in quite an in-depth conversation with a group of hunters. (I should note that most of the menu was ‘off-limits’ due to supply issues.) Most of them are veterans and seem to have a grasp on how the world turns. What had started out as a joke about the movie ‘Red Dawn’ almost turned into a running theme for the conversation. These men and one young lady represented three generations of a family. They’d just come off a late bow-season hunt and were stopping for dinner on the way back to Castle Pines. Our conversation drifted to well past forty-five minutes. They were quite inquisitive as to the nature of my trip. The one underlying vibe I picked up from this particular family could be summarized as ‘preparedness’, I suppose. I was left with the impression they might be preparing to leave their suburb for good. ‘Timing.’ They kept talking about timing their departure. I found it peculiar that they seemed like typical small-town folk, but they did not like me referring to their plans as a ‘bugout.’

I’ll try to get a rental car tomorrow. The flight cancellations are becoming the norm, as are the sustained power outages. Luckily the hotel here has a good generator system. I’m told we can’t use the heater, but we will still have hot water.
